usual.. I haven't posted in a while. Now is a good time - as I am back in transition. It's just a matter of days before I'm in Chateau country with Studio Escalier. A new chapter.. a new opportunity.

For now, I am happy to report that I've recently finished the portrait of Mercia. The process is still too near for me to actually see the painting (what does it look like?). There were days that the painting was smiling at me.. other days it felt more like silent treatment.

Hopefully, when I return in several months, we'll both be smiling. À plus tard!

I just saw the image of the underpainting. Time to cover that up!

I've made quite a bit of progress, but the portrait is by no means in its final state. Lights need to be topped and dropped off. There are some structural and perspective discrepancies. Aside from Mercia's face, the rest remains underpainting. Work to do.

start off the new year with a post.

Among other things, I'm working on a portrait of Mercia - it's a project that has taken quite a while to gain enough momentum. I've been intending to paint her for the past couple of years - I wasn't able to follow through on the first couple attempts. I am really excited about this one. It has been a lot of fun to work on - I am inspired (third time's a charm).

It's on hold for a couple of weeks, but once we get back into rhythm, I'll post more progress. Happy New Year - I hope 2011 is beautiful for all of us! Late.

It was an incredible experience. The classes were excellent, but what I found to be truly rewarding was the time spent in the additional sessions with Tony and several other special friends. Those moments are what I see when I look at Tony's painting.

me up the other day.. wondering why I had stopped posting. I tried to explain to him that I've been meaning to - that I'm in a bit of a transition.. He wouldn't buy it.

Eventually, I agreed to post if he would be willing to come and give me a little paint mixing demo. I've heard rumors about his wizard-like ability to mix it up.

He arrived with a tube of paint and some beer. He sat down long enough for me to take a few pictures and witness his skill. It was astonishing. I'm excited to be able to share this technique with you.

winding down - Just a few more weeks (I'm doing my best to go out with a bang). There are a few portraits that I am starting on for the sprint. I was fortunate enough to help out with the TA-ing duties for several weeks (incredible experience), so I'm getting a bit of a late start on those. I think I can pull them together - the image accompanying the post is only after two days of painting (pretty good for a slow poke like me).

It's been ages once again since I've posted. I've got plenty of things to add (onto my flickr stream) once I take proper pictures.. I'll try to keep up with progress images (again, on flickr) throughout the next two weeks.

I'm enduring a week off from class - I absolutely cannot wait to get back. I feel that mentally, I'm better than I have ever been and I want to maintain this stride. Everything is really starting to make sense - all of the information that I acquired over the past year had previously been floating around as if in a blender. Now as it settles, the paint is coming off of the brush more easily.

Things have been going much better in class since the start of the second half. My calmer approach is seeming to work (knock on wood) - my thoughts have been more organized, and certain ideas I've had bouncing around in my head are starting to settle into place. The bigger picture (in regard to the light and it's principles) is a little more clear.

The last several months in Santa Fe have been great - and very tough. I have been struggling with some of my work in class*, but I'm hoping that it's because I'm challenging myself and stepping beyond the reach of my comfort level. In the coming months I'm hoping to push those boundaries even further, while addressing the issues that are anchors to progress.

Fortunately, I have had several personal successes - one being the painting of the Buddha (I've posted process images in flickr). He taught me much... kept me calm. I plan on taking that momentum into the second half at the Ryder Studio and applying it toward my ambitions (my o'ten resolution). Late.

saddle again*.. (in case anyone is still around)

I've returned from France after seven wonderful months of painting, drawing, loving, exploring, and ping pong-ing (I'm the blur on the left). There is much to talk about - so much, that I can't possibly type it all. So, let's just move forward.

I am now back in the New Mexican desert studying (light and form) with Tony Ryder - I am actually in the class this year and am extremely excited! Tim and Michelle (Studio Escalier) loaded me up with new tools and ideas while in France. Hopefully those take hold and blossom into beautiful things over the next nine months.

For the first two weeks of class, we have been getting back into the swing of things (no Wiffle ball yet) with poster studies (taking into account hue/chroma/value) - I've posted a few (will post a few more) in Flickr.

Maybe if I keep my posts simple, I will be more likely to maintain. I'll do my best! Late.

*I feel as though I've used that one before (probably more than once) - it's been so long between posts that I can't remember... yikes.

my reentry into the blogging world to be something "of the divine," but perhaps that will be featured in my next attempt.

As is the current and unfortunate trend, it has been ages between posts. Since my last, I have been busy not blogging all over Paris - taking in all of the beauty in compliment to many a café crème (other consumptions include graphite dust and paint fumes).

I have spent most of my time over at the Louvre taking lessons from many an old master, with Nicholas de Largillière as my ambassador to painting. The museum has permitted me to learn (in paint) from one of his works within their collection. It has been an extremely educational experience (as well as an excellent means for training in Zen - think... 8.5 million visitors per year*) to this point. I am focusing on the efficiency and the precision of his brush work. He was able to achieve so much form, light and action within so few strokes - an intelligence I am trying to realize.

..and now, he waits - I am going to be late for class! More soon. Late.

*A relatively large fraction of that number may have come through the Italian wing (en route to the Mona Lisa) while I was drawing there over the Easter holiday.

as promised (I'll do my best to keep it up). After the NY show, I lost my posting rhythm - certainly time to get back into motion.

Fortunately, painting hasn't dried up - I've continued to work (productively) through the blog-less abeyance. My self portrait is coming along (I'll post my progress sometime this week, after I touch up a few things). As of this evening, I've started a portrait of a great friend who's joined up with us in the high desert. If all goes well, the painting might find its way to another show in NY, come December.

Aside from my own painting activities, I just finished sitting for a six week portrait pose at the Ryder studio - I became very familiar with the Half Windsor Knot, and am now obsessed (I anxiously wait for a deluge of such knots (an many others) during tomorrow night's election coverage) - eye candy, indeed! Late.

Before I go..

The New York show (I almost forgot)! It was a quality experience - opened up my eyes and inspired my ambitions. I was fortunate to sell a piece, but the most wonderful part of the opening was being able to enjoy the moment with people very special to me - those who went to NY with me, and those who met up with me there - so amazing! Actually, there are many differences. Regardless, I thought that I might be able to squeeze in a quick post while my laundry dries - then I have to pack (leaving for NY in a few hours). I know that promises were made, but I couldn't find any time to work on the self portrait over the last week. I've been aching to paint, but last minute preparations for the show have left my canvas dry.

Speaking of painting, I'll finally be back to working on the self portrait - expect progress reports. Also, I am very disappointed with the string I added in to the key (debating whether, or not, I should paint over it). It was good in theory, but not necessary for the composition (not to mention that I didn't do that great of a job on it).

of monsoon rains have washed away any opportunities to work on the portrait of Mercia (Sadalsuud) for the time being, so it was time to look beyond the clouds and take on another constellation. I was in need of consistent lighting and a model who had a similar schedule as mine, and equally important, a similar taste in music. The one I decided to go with for the painting is a bit of a prima donna (quite the whiner, actually.. and he could use a haircut), but I think everything will work out.

The composition is based on the constellation of Ophiuchus (the serpent-holder). The first drawing/set up - much simpler, and certainly more serious (I've taken a lot of heat for looking too serious/intense in my previous self portrait attempts, which doesn't particularly harmonize with my personality) - had me dressed in black, holding the hose of a nargila. I completed the study, the drawing, and even started in on the painting, but was completely uninspired by it (so much so, that I wasn't planning on posting it here). So, I ditched it.

I played around with the setup and changed my mindset about the project to that of a more lighthearted attitude (I needed a counterweight to balance out the prospect of sitting in a small dark room for hours on end) - I still tried to maintain somewhat of an edge. Hopefully, that will come through in the painting (it's hard to feel it in the charcoal sketch); I am determined to achieve that presence. As for the the space, I have kept both the hookah and the original poster study to fuse it with the initial idea.

This afternoon, I plan on jumping in to the color wash (underpainting). After I make a little progress (and assuming that my model will cooperate), I will be back here with more. Late.

this one of Raven as far as time would allow - really had a lot of fun working on it. It was the first time I've really painted a model with two (drastically different) light sources - also the first time I've painted a hand (I've drawn quite a few). .. it has been too long - my apologies. Good news is that I have been keeping busy - although, I am guilty of sitting around quite a bit. Last time around, I mentioned that I would be posing for a five week portrait in Tony Ryder's class. I have done some modeling in the past, but never for a substantial amount of time. Due to those experiences - some, relatively easy... some, a tad bit painful - I wasn't really sure what to expect (other than a forecast of brainstorms). I was lucky. It was REALLY easy (and plenty of decent ideas came along with the rain). The five weeks absolutely flew by - it was an interesting and gratifying experience to be able to contribute to the artistic process from the opposite angle. I was/am really impressed with everyone's work (check out Krista's).

Due to a number of generous people in Tony's class, I was able to attend many afternoon drawing sessions over the duration of my portrait pose. I got a few drawings in that I am very proud of. Hopefully, there will be more to come!

I have also been gearing up for the autumnal show in New York (and at last... a date! September 13). We (there are several of us involved) are, each, to present thirteen pieces (ten at a small scale, and three at a large - well, larger than the small - scale) of a personal theme - mine involving stars/constellations*. My intention is to treat the smaller works more like studies/sketches, and paint my soul onto the larger pieces - one, of which, is underway. I am lucky enough to have Mercia (who will be presenting her paintings in NY, as well) as my muse and model (I am so excited about the project) - she is so beautiful, and is doing wonderfully (despite the pose, which is certainly NOT easy to hold). It will definitely be worth the effort.

* We are to incorporate an element of each others' theme within one of our own pieces - to unify.

I'm still in the desert. I have been extremely fortunate to have spent the majority of the past two weeks drawing in Tony Ryder's class as an alternate. In the coming weeks, I will be spending quite a bit of time there as the next portrait model. Although, I won't be drawing or painting at that time, I'll still be around to soak in some of Tony's teaching and critiques - plus, it will enable me to stick around a bit longer (it really is a wonderful environment for me to be in.. I am so happy to be here).

I don't think I've mentioned it on here yet, but Krista, Chris (Rigney), and I are going to have an exhibition this August in New York. With thirteen pieces to show, I have my work cut out for me. There are quite a few seeds planted in my head - with the help of the desert sun, I'll be doing my best to bring them to life. Once I make some headway, I'll be posting (on here, and more frequently in Flickr).

So, life is good (not to mention that baseball season is about to begin)! Late.

a years difference since the last time I posted, but it couldn’t have been that long ago!? Anyway, if you have been following along with my Flickr page, then you’ve noticed that I have been frequently trying to post pictures and updates of my artistic exploration. So, please don’t be fooled by the lack of bloggular input – I am working very hard to maintain that nice rhythm I had going on in France.

I’ve been doing a lot of short term drawing studies; following those up with more of a long term painting project (probably not too much longer though – I need to finish it and move on to bigger and (potentially) better canvases). You will certainly see it posted on here upon its completion.

.. for now, anyways. The last four (plus) months have been absolutely amazing. I didn't post on here as much as I would have liked, but it was very difficult to find the opportunity. There was no idle time, from start to finish - which was excellent. All of the incessant activity made the clock fly (a handful of us, including me, literally left France with broken watches, so I am convinced that we were, basically, just cramming as much as we could into the time we had). Every moment not spent on our artistic evolution was spent exploring. My experience in the French countryside and on the streets of Paris - each so different, and so wonderful, in their own regard - will stay with me forever. I wish that you could all have been there for it.

I have tons of pictures to go through, and will surely upload a few of them as I go along. I will also be continuing on in my artistic pursuit - so keep checking back to see what I'm working on (and to find out what's next - there are a few things in the works). Happy new year everyone! Late.

to go. The next three weeks are going to be spent on one more drawing pose and one more painting pose.

Last time we spoke, my portrait of Sarah was a mess, but in the end, it pulled itself together, and I am actually quite happy with it. As I probably went too large with the drawing, I definitely went too small with the painting. My initial plan was to fit the entire body onto the canvas - which made working on the face quite difficult (ended up spending too much time trying to tweak it, and therefore, didn't get much body work done). I haven't posted a picture of it yet, but I will once the paint is dry and I add a little retouch varnish to bring back the colors.

I have a really good feeling about this three week sprint to the finish, so keep checking back. late.

been a month already!? Feels like a week.. maybe two.

Since I last came through, we've gestured, blocked, rounded, shaded, lit, drawn and painted. We've learned, forgotten, relearned and forgotten again.. some have bled and others, cried - all these things culminating into a two week (drawing) portrait pose, and a two week (painting) pose, which are now underway.

Unfortunately, I am not particularly happy with the way either of these endeavors is going. The drawing of Sarah (who happens to be our new model) is not post worthy at this point, but I promise to have it up at least when it's completed. The painting is only at the (monochromatic - as opposed the chromatic) underpainting stage. Fortunately, there is hope for each.

The most exciting news is that Krista and I are going to be staying in Paris until late December, continuing our studies with Tim. Class will be held in Gericault's original studio, followed by plenty of Louvre action - This is, truly, an exciting opportunity. Sign up for postcards (not that I am any better about sending those out than I am about writing here)!

.. and keep checking back (Flickr at least - I try to put pictures up regularly). My trompe-l’œil side project is coming along slowly but surely. Late.

I know.. twice in one week!?

We started the Sunday-Thursday schedule this week, so the days are a little bit screwy... but class has still been great. We've added the light and shadow masses into our morning block-in routine, and we've continued to knock out poster studies in the afternoon session (we'll.. we're trying to knock out poster studies).

The other night, I met Ted Seth Jacobs (Tony's, Tim's and Michelle's teacher). That was interesting. It was cool to see his work, but in all honesty, I think that it pales in comparison to the work of his students - although, they are too modest to admit it.

Well, unless you factor in my inability to keep up with this blog. I have dug myself into quite the hole - if you knew how much fun I was having, you would definitely understand.

So.. the rundown:
Paris was absolutely amazing - I am really looking forward to spending more time there. I met up with Pascal (a good friend from Arizona/Chicago who happened to be home in Paris on vacation), and along with a few others, we rode all around "the City of Lights" on a string of Velibs until 6pm CST (so.. late).

The next day (after some much needed sleep), I (barely) made my way to Angers. It was certainly an adventure, but in the end, I was laying siege to the Chateau D'Angers with Krista and Caroline (classmates). After storming the castle and enjoying a good lunch, we met up with a few others (more classmates) and headed over to Argenton Chateau - where I've been ever since (aside from a small excursion back to Angers) soaking in all that I can of this experience.

Class has been great for the first two weeks. We spent all of week one drawing - working on gesture (inner movement) and blocking in the figure (definitely a thought provoking exercise - as simple as it may seem). We maintained the drawing into week two, and started painting (poster studies - if you remember from way back, when I was a more reliable blogger; they are studies that deal with the figure/subject in a planar form, and that focus on value, chroma (intensity), and hue). So far, so good.

It has only been a few weeks, but it feels like we've been here forever (in a good way). We've been going nonstop outside of class. Krista is THE Iron Chef, so we've been feasting like kings. The area, itself, is so visually intoxicating (the wine is pretty intoxicating too.. and inexpensive), so hiking around has helped to kill off the calories (Frisbee with Krista and MC (Marie Catherine), definitely burn off the rest). Caroline and I are having a Bocce Ball Battle - she'll deny it, but I'm winning approximately 150-30 (running total). My flatmate Chris, our model Rachel, and Toby (yes.. there is another one.. it's a very weird situation for both of us) have been a lot of fun to be around as well. It is a great group of people (and they all support my chocolate habit).

Phew, so I've dug myself out enough for now. à plus tard.

Note: whatever your preconceptions of Tahiti may be, toss them out of the window. Not only is it different, it’s so much more.

La orana! So, I made it back – Why would I come back, you ask? Think of it as like waking up from an amazing dream. If I had a choice, I’d still be sound asleep. That’s okay; I needed to come back so that you could see my pictures. I have thousands (I was so deeply in awe, that I would take, on average, ten shots of the same thing. While hiking on Aorai, I probably took one picture every fifteen steps). For all of the great shots I got, there were so many that I missed out on. Most of my favorite (and the most beautiful) moments remain, only, in my memory (I think we’re still a few years off from being able to upload those – but once the technology is available.. check back!). Be sure to remember, that as beautiful as some of the pictures are, they don’t even come close to reality.

Again, I've been slacking (as far as posting goes). Since finishing the last commission, I have spent most of my time (and sanity) over at the tool & die shop flexing my CAD/QCE muscles (while simultaneously trying to learn French, and do battle with a progressive brain cloud*).

My French still needs work, but I should be getting in a lot of practice over the next few weeks. Angelo (one of my favorite people in the world - a great friend from ASU), invited me to tag along with him on his vacation back home. His home - Tahiti (not too bad). It's definitely a unique opportunity that I have to take advantage of (worry not, I don't plan on jumping into any volcanoes - maybe a metaphorical one or two).

That still doesn't really explain why I've been learning French. In August, I set sail for France on a scholarship to continue my painting/drawing studies with Tim and Michelle at Studio Escalier - I am absolutely thrilled. Once I am there, the rate of bloggular posting will be on the rise again (guaranteed). Plus tard.

I'm back. The blog (along with myriad (I love that word) parentheses) is back. Baseball is back (next week). Spring is here – things are good.

My camera has been suffering from E18 (jammed lens syndrome) since day two of my latest adventure in Santa Fe – which has meant little/no photography (on several occasions, I was able to use someone else’s; hence, the latest batch (if you can call four a batch) of images). This visual drought has been dissipating my motivation to keep up with posting, but thanks to my mom’s and Krista’s unrelenting encouragement… I’m back.

Where to start? Much has happened since I was last here. It began over a month ago, with my flights being cancelled and delayed. Somehow, I still ended up in New Mexico. During my stay in Santa Fe, Jane Angelhart (see Oil and Water) invited me to convert her living room into my bedroom (I dreamt via air-mattress). Krista Schoening (Oil Candy - her new oranges are fantastic!) was staying with Jane as well. There was, seemingly, a constant state of craziness (it’s a good thing) while I was there.

I got to see Tony a few times, which was definitely a pleasure (he is such a great person). Krista, Jane, and I spent a lot of time with Anna and Robert, who were with me in Tony’s class last fall (actually, I got to see a slew of the Tony crew while I was there). We even hung out with Tim and Michelle (Silver Fortress) quite a bit.

With all this socializing going on, I was still painting away in Tim’s class - looking large (well, I have always looked lean - Tim was encouraging me to take a broader approach with my painting). I really enjoyed his teaching, and would have loved to have at least one more week (if not more). Between class demonstrations, poster studies, and scrubbing the intense chroma of ultramarine blue out of my pearl-snap shirt, I was just getting started. I will admit though, I was putting a lot of (unwarranted) pressure upon myself to paint well – which led to a lot frustration (especially early on).

During one weekend, we took advantage of the opportunity to work on still life painting with Michelle Tulley. I was working on a potted succulent (hens and chicks – Google it) of sorts. Well, painting it (on the thirstiest of canvases). Much to the shame of Tim’s teaching, I wasn’t looking large at all, or painting with any speed whatsoever (slow, is watching paint dry; slower yet is watching Toby paint – see skeleton above). It was a great time nonetheless, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll have another chance to study with both Tim and Michelle soon (like, autumn soon).

I am completely overwhelmed with things to talk about, so I’m pouring it all in at once, and you can paint your own picture from here.

[Huge flying ants that got into everything, getting lost and not knowing where I’m going to/coming from, PHOTON ENVELOPE, tanks (multicolored), dark chocolate gingersnaps, exploding tubes of paint, oatmeal, oatmeal, oatmeal, non-stop, amazing stars and skies, snow and palettes in the snow, the coolest workout facility ever, France-talk, air filters, R2D2, Grace Kim exhibition, comfortable air mattress vs. deflated air mattress, the most awkward bowl of French onion soup, no cell reception, Miss Mo Ye, 6am, too much cranberry juice, laps around the plaza with Krista and Mercia, the plaza café, sopaipillas y horchata, hitchhikers, doc, teepees, ATM, Kinko’s, E18, setting up, taking down, Odd Nerdrum, mountains and foothills, Andreeva, wine and cheese, iron chef (iron lackey), dinner parties and dishes, dirt roads, solitude (just kidding), Yuqi Wang’s book, the poster downstairs, four person painting, Lily’s band, the plaza at night, interesting emails from Ted, triangulating the model, Negra Modelo in a glass with lime, crazy demo discussions, twenty-five minutes at a time, Michelle(the model)’s crazy boots, space heaters, only children, “What are you doing Jane?” Aluminum brownies, heated car seats, Bill’s headbands and matching t-shirts, the chocolate smith, cinnamon drops, Second Street, Canyon Road, smallest chocolate eruption ever (although it tasted damn good), red wine, Rain the superhero in red (on a donkey), kneadable elephants, new friends, a lot of painting, and a lot more] Definitely a great time.

So, after all was said and done, I made it back to Albuquerque and got to spend some quality time with my family there. Fortunately (depending on how one would look at it), I got sick the night before heading home (and so ended my13 year streak of staying puke free – sorry about that; it was a streak that I was proud of), and was able to extend my trip a few extra days (which I certainly made the most of). Eventually, I did come home, and even though I haven’t been blogging, you’ll be happy to know (if you’ve made it this far) that I’ve been painting and drawing – as of next week, I’ll be watching baseball too.

Well, the plan was for me to be on a plane destined for Albuquerque's Sunport - aquainting myself with a beautiful valentine that just so happened to be assigned to the seat next to mine.

As we all know, things rarely materialize as planned. So instead, I'm having a nice, romantic evening with the Chicago Bulls (they just took the lead with a Chris Duhon three-pointer). Anyways, all flights are packed until Saturday morning at six. So, I have a little longer to pack for my trip (Luckily the workshop doesn't start until Monday).

My paints/supplies are already waiting for me in the desert (mailed them out there on Monday), so I'll have to find other ways to be creative/productive before I attempt the airplane thing again (the two doctors will just have to sit back, relax, and oxidize for several weeks).

I'm not sure that I'll be able to update from Santa Fe like I did before, but I will definitely be around afterwards to document the experience and show any new art work - like last time, I plan on taking a bunch of pictures (again, that's the plan.. we'll see what happens). Late.

Alright, so I forgot to mention this last time... my new commission is to paint the same painting as before. Unlike the first time I painted this, I have a reasonable deadline = this version is definitely going to be much better than the last. The whole process will be the same, but due to the new standard of quality, all previous images/posts related to the original painting are now obsolete (never look at them again - I'll know if you do!).

As of now, I've just been working on the underpainting - I won't start the actual painting until I get back from Santa Fe in March. I figure that way, I'll be able to apply anything new that I learn to the final layer. While in New Mexico, I am also supposed to meet the two doctors that I've been painting (each would eventually like to have a copy of the painting, which is the reason that I'm painting it again* - Now it all makes sense!). I'll be posting my progress, so keep checking. Late.

* Because this version is going to be so much better than the original, they'll hire me to do a third - which, in turn, will be so much better than the current, that they'll have to hire me to do a fourth... and so on, and so forth (please.. no!).

Back to reality, and after quite the hiatus, I'm finally posting here.

I spent the last week back in Arizona with the Zona posse (sans Joe). We hiked, we drew, we drove (lo drove a lot), we walked, we didn't sleep much, we chilled, we went out, we watched DA' BEARS beat the Seahawks, Casey ran a half marathon (we congratulated him), we ate dinner outside in miserable weather, we wii'd, we played poker, we played ultimate frisbee, we came, we saw, we conquered, we did a lot more, and we enjoyed each others' company. There were a few firsts for me on this trip too - Exploring camelback, the Phoenix Art Museum, and a nascent friendship; all which have sparked a new source of inspiration.

So, now I'm back with the snow and the negative degree windchill, which is okay, because the cold is needed to appreciate the warmth (deep!). Best part about being back is being able to sleep in my own bed (I do appreciate you letting me use your cot Jeff), and being able to take a real shower (no offense Jim, but that might be the worst shower head in the history of shower heads).

There is some good work ahead of me as well. I have another commission through the Eye Associates of New Mexico, and in February, I'm heading back to Santa Fe to monitor/assist Timothy Stotz's workshop (see Silver Fortress / Studio Escalier - initially I was supposed to have the position for Michelle Tulley's class, but it got switched around). The waves have been going my way as of late, and I plan on riding them as far as I can (and then I'll swim out to the next). I'll continue to work on studies as well. Now, I'm going to go stretch some canvas. Late.

Not really - just needed a break. I feel so much better now that I've put some space between myself and that painting (1,348.58 miles to be exact). I figured that I'd let my paint brushes cool off a bit this weekend, but now it's time to get my nose back to that creative grindstone. For instance:

Today, I cloned myself a few times so that I could start a band. It sounded good for a few minutes, but then things started getting out of hand (okay.. now I'm writing lyrics). Needless to say, my egos got the best of me - each one of me wanted the spotlight, and chaos transpired.

Back in reality, I do have a few things that I promised to take care of before I start any more painting. Keep checking - I'll be back. Late.

I started the form painting today (phew), and got about half way through dude one's face. Got to get him done and move over to number two tomorrow. My goal is to be forming something other than faces by sometime on Tuesday.

Backtracking a bit. I (obviously) finished the underpainting yesterday. You can tell by looking at his shirt and tie that I got really loose and sloppy (it hurt me to do it, but it was necessary to finish).

Okay... back to the future. Marty and Doc* suggest that you check out the picture for this post at the larger resolution, because only then can you REALLY see the difference between the under and form painting layers**. According to Victor Hugo, to see is to devour. So devour (but please don't ingest. put it back when you're done). Late.

Okay... That's it for day four (and I'm behind schedule - it was only supposed to take me a day to finish the second doctor's face). That's okay. I'll just make the rest of my underpainting a lot looser (after I finish the ears of course - nobody likes loose ears). I'll be back on track if I can make it to the form painting by Sunday/Monday. I think I'm going to have to take Cathy's advice and haul out the BIG BRUSHES*. Late.

*Interesting fact: These large painting instruments are called "iLOS BRUSHOS GIGANTE!" by many a nomadic gringo in New Mexico, whereas the ancient Romans referred to them as BRVSHI MAXIMVS. They can be up to 12 feet in length (the brushes.. not the ancient Romans), and can completely underpaint an 18" x 24" canvas with one stroke (well, the ancient Romans could do that too... even with regular brushes)!

I just finished up day two of the underpainting. Sixteen more until deadline. It's going pretty well, however the humidity levels here make the underpainting process a little bit more difficult (more paint pullage). No big deal though. I've just got to kick over the hurdles and keep going*. I'm going to try and get as much of the other guy's face done as possible tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. Late.

*No more flip-flops... I'm painting barefoot now (it's painless kicking over hurdles as long as they remain metaphorical)!

at the New Mexican horizon, and now I'm back within the seemingly impenetrable grey, horizonless confines of cook county. Wait, wait, wait. I make it seem far too bleak - it's not. It's always good to be back home (even though the humidity talks my hair into curls).

The good news is that I have some work to do. Last monday, my mom and grandma were walking around in a local Albuquerque art gallery (Weems) that they've been going to for years, and ended up talking to the owner about me and what I had been up to in Santa Fe. She insisted that I see her at once and that I bring my work along. So, I went.. and it paid off. She got a commission for me with the Eye Associates of New Mexico on the spot.

Unfortunately, I am going to be working from a photograph, which lacks the color, form and intensity of reality. But, it is work nonetheless, and may be a future host to other opportunities and possibilities (from which I can work by a preferred method). I have until December 16th to get it completed and..

I'll bet that you haven't heard that one before!

Well, Friday was the last day. When the morning started, it was just Pauline and I painting from our group. Every one else was already on their way home. My goal was to just frame the face, since I knew I wouldn't be able to condition all of her hair. I was basically finished by the long break, and decided to celebrate by treating myself to some iced chai. By lunch, the party had begun and I had moved on to wine. After lunch, it was only Eva (the model) and me, trying to communicate (she doesn't speak much English.. and I was under the influence of Bacchus).

I met a lot of wonderful people and some who are sure to be good friends for a long time, not to mention that it was such an honor to be able to study with Tony. They all had such nice and encouraging things to say to me, so I definitely made my way back to Albuquerque with a big smile on my face... ...until I was in the middle of three and a half hours worth of traffic!!! At least the traffic gods waited until my very last commute before dropping a jam on me. I had been very lucky in that respect.

My folks flew in for Thanksgiving; it is definitely nice to see them again (although, it only feels like a week since I last saw them - time just flew by). Well, that's all I've got for now (I need to figure out what I'm going to do with myself for these next few days, since my routine will be all out of whack). Late.

This is it. I'm sitting outside of the drawing studio (the flip-flops made way for the shoes for this one), doing my best to type with numb fingers. Tonight is the last night of drawing (as long as I'm not frostbitten - remind me to take my chairs home with me).

I feel good. Had a decent day painting, and hopefully that carries over into drawing. I was a little discouraged with my effort last week (even though it started off well), so I need to step up to the plate this time (I ever tell you how much I love baseball?).

Back to Eva. I did a little paint-stic surgery on her nose today (needed to be rounded a bit more in the dark light), finished up the neck, and started in on the hair. It's coming along; definitely makes a difference. I'll be sure to post up this weekend so you can see how she ends up. Now, I'm going to see if I can get inside to thaw out my hands. Late.

Which reminds me.. I need to fill out the evalutation form for tomorrow.

Welp, Eva is almost complete (we're not counting everything below her neck). I have two more days to go. I am basically done with her face. I just have to do some touch ups and then finish up the neck. After that, I'll probably brush her hair (with paint of course) until it's time to sign it. I am extremely happy with the way she's looking (I feel that this method is (picture) perfect for me - I will definitely be able to evolve with it).

As for the flip-flops.. GEEZ! It's starting to get cold out there. I can do it though. Two more days of painting in flip-flops (luckily, indoors), and one more day of drawing at Tony's studio. I need to see if I can get a group picture of the class before it's all said and done. Unfortunately, Cathy and Patty already left, so we'll be missing a few cruicial artists.

I can't believe that there is only one more week left of class. It has been such a great experience so far. I have learned so much, have made quite a few good friends, and have made it into mid November still wearing my flip-flops (making the most of it, because there will be no flip-floppery when I get back home)!

Eva is coming along nicely. I was able to get pretty far with the underpainting, although I would have liked to work on her beautiful necklace. The facial details turned out to be the breaks for my speed painting, which is okay, because those needed to be attempted with precision. I fell a bit short though.. well, her nose fell a bit short. I realized as I was finishing up yesterday that, although it appears to be her nose, it is slightly lacking in vertical length. I'm pretty sure it is something that I'll be able to adjust in the form painting, but unfortunately, the nose job has to wait until Monday.

So yeah. We'll see how far I can take Eva. My goal is to finish all of her face with the form painting (which definitely seems doable)... and to make it one more week wearing my flip-flops. Late

No, I'm not selling cars, but my painting of Eva is definitely rolling (so much for the turtle vs. the hare - previous post). I'm not sure what's going on. Something must have *clicked* when I went to bed early on Monday night. I have been full of energy and momentum since yesterday morning (This sleep stuff is magical - I should have tried it sooner). I've shifted into first gear and I'm driving my paint brush with a lead foot.. and it feels pretty good. I can't wait to get back there tomorrow and take it even further (I'm definitely going to make it to the form painting this time.. knock on wood).

Drawing last night was good as well. It was the first time, since week one, that my back hadn't bothered me or that my eyes hadn't been a little blurry. Not to mention that Macarena was a pleasure to draw (.. and I love her Spanish accent). I have three more hours with her tomorrow night, so we'll see if I can maintain this pace.

I went on a great hike in the foothills with Tony today. It was somewhere in the Santa Fe area, but I can't recall the name (the trail began with an A. Well, the name of the trail did anyways. As you might imagine, the trail began with an incline).

I drove out to SF in the afternoon and met up with him at his drawing studio. Next thing I knew, we were on our way up. It was an absolutely beautiful day out; perfect for a hike. It was nice getting to know and converse with him outside of the classroom atmosphere. On top of being an amazing artist, he is a very cool guy. He had a lot of encouraging things to say about my work, which worked out well for this picture (I wouldn't have wanted everyone to see me crying on the blog). It was a lot of fun, and I definitely needed the exercise. Speaking of exercises, tomorrow starts a new pose, and therefore, a new poster study. I'll let you know how it goes. Happy Trails to you.

.. and hopefully the model won't bail this time. So, I'm as done as I am going to be with Hillary. Aside from filling in the rest of the neck shadow, I should have left the rest of the underpainting alone. I kept trying to tweek the areas that needed adjusting (which, normally, would have been corrected in the actual painting layer - but I wasn't going to get to it, so I tried to fix those areas), and continued to pick up paint (see previous post), due to the wash not being dry. I spent pretty much 3/4ths of the day unsuccessfully trying not to erase what I had done. Having to overcompensate, I went a little darker than I would have liked in some areas. Fortunately, an easy fix in the form painting. I'm looking forward to a fresh start on Monday. I'll see you then. Late

Okay. One more day to go with this one. I'm not going to even make it to the form painting. That's okay though. It is more important for me to take my time and go about things the right way. I was quite a bit frustrated the other day; trying to rush. On the way home I realized that I'm not necessarily there to turn out finished paintings, but to learn the techniques. I have to be true to myself and my own style, so I decided to go back to taking my time (which can be meditative for me*). I've been much happier since slowing down, and it has paid off. I got a really positive critique from Tony (basically letting me know that I'm on the right track), which as got me even more excited/motivated about what I'm doing. So even though I'm no where close to finished with Hillary, I'm heading in the right direction, which is where I want to be. Late.

*Meditative as long as I'm not picking up paint. if you don't know about picking up paint: Epimetheus told Pandora never to open the jar she had received from Zeus. Well, he made it into New Mexico. I was beginning to wonder because I hadn't heard from him in a while. But, I guess it's that time of year, and he always seems to come by when the candy is out. He even showed up to class today. I think that everyone was as happy to see Cletus as I was. He critiqued and helped me out with my painting, which was good, because I was starting to get a bit frustrated with it. Tony was even fortunate enough to get a little advice from him. It's too bad he can't be around more often, because where ever he is, the smiles seem to follow. He's definitely one guy you can't fence in. Well, not as long as the NASCAR circuit exists.

It has been waaaaaaaaay too long since I've posted. A lot has happened since last week. Luckily my poster study of Joe could be considered finished, because he bailed on us. After getting a nice drawing inked on a nicely stretched canvas, he just didn't show up. No call to the school or anything. After half a day of sitting around, Andreeva found us a new model, so we had to start over from square one with Hillary as our model. So I began with a new poster study (which I did the right way this time), and then after getting a new, smaller canvas, made way on the drawing (I brought it home this weekend to finish inking it in, since we're already a week behind schedule).

In the midst of all this, my buddy Tim arrived from Tucson. He came in and got to check out the class (he snapped off a few pictures throughout the weekend, unfortunately, I didn't have the right cable to load them onto my computer - so, you'll have to wait for those). I really think he enjoyed it (being an artist himself).

He wandered around the Santa Fe plaza for a while as well. After class, he took me over to see the Peaceful Wind gallery which is exhibiting contemporary Tibetan art (A little Timfo - Tim is very into buddhist practice and art). We got a tip from the guy running the gallery about a Stupa (basically a spiritual monument) not too far from the plaza. So, we checked it out, and it was not only beautiful, but it was enclosed by a cinder block wall right smack-dab in the middle of a trailer park. Total contrast. It was definitely fun to see, prayer flags and all. Unfortunately, it was closed for the evening, so all we could do was look.

Saturday morning, we got up around 9am and took the Sandia tram up to the summit. After hiking around the top for a while, we started our descent. It may have been a 5-6 hour, ten mile journey to the bottom, but every second was worth it. It is unbelievable how massive the mountain was (You just can't tell from the bottom).

Today, Tim and I just chilled. We walked around the UNM campus for a bit, I finally came across an ultimate frisbee game (I'll go check that out next week). It was a pretty cool campus. After dinner, I took Tim over to the airport and here I am. Now, here I go. I have to get that inking of Hillary done for tomorrow. Late.

So, I should probably wear my running shoes tomorrow, because Tony is going to make me run laps for getting carried away with this poster study of Joe. I did have a lot of fun with it, although I kind of deviated from the purpose of the study, which is to focus on the color/value/intensity (which I did do... I just added in way (waaaaay) too much detail). So we'll see. Hopefully I'm not running in circles all day tomorrow and I'll get to work on the charcoal drawing. Now, I have to go stretch my canvas, otherwise I won't have anything to draw on. Late.

Okay, I took Lily as far as time would allow. I'm going to be starting again from scratch on Monday with a new pose. I guess the schedule for the next two weeks is as follows:

week 7 - poster study, charcoal drawing, wash-in
week 8 - form painting

Once those two weeks are up, there will be one more pose to tackle. I have no idea who the model is going to be, but there is a rumor floating around that it is going to be this dude named Joe. We'll see. I'm kind of hoping for a pose with a lot of shadow/light contrast and a dark background (something chiaroscuro-ish - think Rembrandt). Tony is all done with the demo, so we are going to have all day to paint. I would like to have a few more days painting Lily, but I am equally ready to start a new pose.

I have no idea what's going on over here in Albuquerque for the next few days. Tim is coming in from Zona on Thursday, and there will be plenty of cranaety, I'm sure, so I'll try not to get into too much trouble this weekend. Late.

Okay, so I am two days into the form painting now (I didn't post my progess yesterday because I was busy watching one of the craziest football games ever. The Bears' offense certainly was offensive. Luckily, the defense and special teams stepped it up and pried an amazing win out of the Cardinals' grasp). Back to the painting. I have been working around in the shadow areas, doing my best to build up the forms. It feels so much better putting on a nice buttery layer of paint as opposed to the wash in. I adjusted the contour of Lily's face a little bit as well, and am much happier with it. The process, in general, has me very excited. It matches my personality and style, so I am definitely in the right place.

5:00 am - Snooze button

5:10 am - Drag myself out of bed, throw on something warm

5:30 am - (No, it didn't really take me 20 minutes to put on a sweatshirt) Tyler and I head out down Tramway towards the fiesta with no absolute plan.

6:00 am - Bypass all traffic and find some random place to park

6:01 am - Walk in the direction of the balloon park

6:02 - 7:59 am - Wander along in the dark, stumbling through patches of cacti and other desert flora until we find a decent spot. Then we wait (we kept ourselves warm, awake, and entertained by messing around with the different features on Tyler's new camera).

8:00 am - A balloon!

8:02 am - More balloons.. and they kept on coming as long as we were willing to take pictures. Tyler and I took so many (great) pictures, unfortunately, I can't upload all of them (well, I could). So, I grabbed a few, and maybe I'll add some others eventually.

9:30 am - We head back to the car and discover that we had tresspassed on Native American Territory (sorry guys). I wanted to bring home some of the balloons that we caught (see picture) and cook them up for dinner, but Tyler has a soft spot for balloons/ballooners, so we released them back into the atmosphere before driving home.

I found out about an ultimate frisbee group in the area, so I am going to check that out tomorrow (stay away rain). Late

At last! The underpainting is done. Well, as done as It is going to get. I can finally start the form painting (Now I have all weekend to look at what I have, become unsatisfied with it, and make up my mind that I will spend Monday touching things up - it is already starting). So you ask why there is so much blank canvas, and I suggest that we continue to appreciate the underpainting layer as underwear; it is definitely sexier to leave something to the imagination (BS, cough).

I think it is going to be an early night tonight. Tyler and I are going to head over to the balloon fiesta in the am.. like, 5 am (that was my bedtime in college). Late.

I didn't get the chance to post yesterday, so here is where I left off today. She is coming along pretty well. Tony seemed pretty happy with it. He gave me a little advice, and I worked that back into the painting - which kept me from getting as far as I had hoped to today. But no problem. Tomorrow, the first thing I am going to work on will be those areas around her mouth, followed by her forehead. Hopefully then, I will be able to finish the form along the side of her head. So definitely check back tomorrow night. Now that I think about it, I am going to dinner with a few classmates before drawing, so it will be 50/50 (I will or I won't) whether I post or not. I'll see if I can get a few minutes in.

The balloons are crazy! makes for a really enjoyable (well, even more so) ride down Tramway. I am definitely going to try and wake up for the ascension on Saturday. Late.

I'm still working on the underpainting. I'm sure I would have finished today if Tony didn't demo all morning (uh huh.. sure Toby. If you say so). I am just happy that I'm done with the shadow areas. I spent way too much time in there, but now, I'm out and very excited to be working the lit areas. I'm thrilled with the way her cheek looks. It will be nice to get to the other one done so it doesn't look like she got a black eye sparring with the other models during one of our fifteen minute breaks (Although, I might suggest that to Tony, see what he thinks - we might be able to get some good gesture drawings out of it. Hmmm.. she could get a nice shiner to match my painting, and I wouldn't have to adjust as much!).

Okay, so Tony finished his underpainting demo today and will reveal to us his secret (shhhh) techniques for form painting tomorrow. This is what I came for, so I'm very excited about it. It's very fun to watch him demo. He tells great stories and uses all kinds of metaphors to explain what he is doing. That, and he is quite fast (well.. compared to me). His work is absolutely amazing (check out the link to his site if you haven't), and it is even more breathtaking in person. There is a lot that a photograph just can't absorb.

If the weather is as nasty as it was here today, I may not stick around for the late drawing class tomorrow (I'm hearing Santa Fe might get snow tonight). Well see.

Here is Lily, phase two - still working on the underpainting. So far, I have only done the shadow areas of the form, which explains her geisha-like appearance.

The balloon festival has started. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures yet. I had seen a total of 83 balloons on my drive to SF since school started, and there were at least that many floating around while i was driving yesterday. My cousin Tyler and I were going to check out the mass ascension this morning, but when 6 am rolled around, rolling over and going back to sleep seemed like more fun. The weather promises to be better next weekend, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for now.

So, for now, I am going to fill in some down time before I fill in the rest of my underpainting (lots of playoff baseball and hopefully a Bears game on Sunday - I really need to find some physical activity too).

So, In class we all dove in to our underpaintings. Here is what I've got so far (I brought the camera cable with me today!). I cannot wait until I'm swimming along in the final paint layer.

Okay, let me explain the underpainting. Basically, it is just a wash-in (as one would paint a wash with watercolor) using a solvent to thin out the paint instead of adding an oil medium to the paint. It is a base for the actual painting layer to rest on. "Like underwear," as Tony described it in class. In that regard, I am trying to make my underpainting look as sexy as possible. I have tomorrow and Monday to finish it up; then it's on to the outerwear.

Alright, It is drawing time again. I must have left my draw-face at home with my camera cable on Tuesday because I sure wasn't feeling "it." I did end up with a great line drawing though, and I really enjoyed the model (would have been great to paint). I'll get a picture of it up soon. Late.

So I forgot to bring along the cable so that I could upload and post images while killing time in Santa Fe. Luckily, I happened to have some stock photos of the Cloud Cliff cafe/bakery (again, where I am doing my killing) laying around my hard drive's floor. That will have to do until tomorrow when I can post Deidre's unfinished underpainting. Unfortunately, I won't be able to take it any further because we are starting the Lily underpainting next. I know, I know. "Toby, you never finish anything." It's okay this time because no one did (suckas!).

Ahh.. Friday. It has been a good one so far.

Yesterday was a late night (as Tuesdays and Thursdays are - evening drawing class over in SF). I got to sit and draw next to the master himself (Tony) and his apprentice (Anna, the masteress in training), who together, put me in my place. It was a lot of fun (as well as motivating) sitting between the two. Both of them had outstanding drawings over the three hour period, making me realize that it is going to take a lot of work/practice if they are going to name a Ninja Turtle after me someday (but I am determined). That all being said, my drawing was still decent.

I chased the moon all the way home from Santa Fe (it is even a relaxing drive at night). The stars are plenty, and it was nice to see the pleiades, who I've missed since last winter, perched up over the sandias.

Okay, back to Friday. As I said, it has been a good one. In class, I finished up drawing and inking the portrait of Lily, and am definitely excited about washing it in next week. After lunch, I hung around and drew for the last several hours. A few classmates asked me to demo some of my techniques for a bit, which was quite a privilege (I just hope Tony doesn't come after me with his mahl stick on Monday morning).

Anyways. I have two days of down time ahead of me (I hope the Bears game is televised here Sunday).

Okay, well.. I'm here in New Mexico (back and forth between Albuquerque and Santa Fe) looking for some color. I am three weeks deep into Tony Ryder's figure/portrait in oil workshop. So far, so good. It is definitely worth the double dose of driving 60 miles every day. Just being in a creative and artistic environment, alone, has really gotten me motivated to step it up myself.

Catching up on the past three weeks:
week 1 - poster studies
- basically just a color/value/intensity study of the model
(no emphasis at all on drawing - which was tough)
week 2 - good, old fashioned drawing
- drawing the model
week 3 - drawing/inking - on canvas
- sketching out the model with vine charcoal
going over it with a really light wash of paint

We've done several of each per week. today I pretty much finished up my sketch of Lily (I'm sure Tony will have some ideas), and I'll ink it in tomorrow and get ready for next week's wash in. I took a picture of the Lily sketch along with the poster study I finished in the first week, but I left my cable back in Albuquerque, so it will have to wait.

Speaking of waiting, I am just hanging out at the Cloud Cliff Cafe (free wireless) across the street from The Ryder Studio where figure drawing starts in a half hour. Hopefully, I'll get to do some drawing tonight. Tuesday I ended up modeling.. full nudity (yeah right).. because one of our models didn't show.

Anyways, now that this thing is rolling I'll be posting more often. So keep coming, and I'll keep drawing/painting.
